“Use Ethernet” is standard advice and it is often right — but not always, and it is worth testing before buying an adapter.
What each stream needs
- SD: around 3 Mbps
- HD (1080p): around 8 Mbps
- 4K: 25 Mbps or more
Measure at your real viewing hour, not at midday. Evening congestion is exactly when buffering appears. Use Speedtest on the streaming device itself where possible — a phone next to the TV can show a very different result.
When Ethernet genuinely helps
- The device is more than one room from the router.
- You are on 2.4 GHz in a crowded building.
- Speed tests fluctuate widely minute to minute.
When it will not help
If the wired result matches the Wi-Fi result and buffering continues, the bottleneck is upstream — either your provider or the stream source. An adapter will change nothing. This is the case most often mistaken for a hardware problem.
Testing it properly
Borrow an adapter or move the device next to the router with a short cable before spending money. Ten minutes of testing settles it.
Powered adapters matter
On a Fire TV stick or Chromecast, use a powered Ethernet adapter. Unpowered ones cause intermittent dropouts that look exactly like a bad stream. See the device guide for what each model supports.
